PPF vs ceramic coating: what is the difference?

They solve different problems. Here is how to choose, and why many clients use both.

PPF protects paint from physical impact like rock chips. Ceramic coating adds gloss and makes washing easier. They are not substitutes, and many clients use both.

Paint protection film

PPF is a physical layer. It is thick enough to absorb the impact of small stones, which is exactly what happens on the front of a vehicle on gravelled roads. Because it is a film, it is applied panel by panel, and most clients start with the bumper, hood, fenders and mirrors. See our PPF packages.

Ceramic coating

A ceramic coating is a liquid that cures into a hard, slick layer on top of your paint. It makes the surface hydrophobic, so water beads and rolls off, and dirt and road film rinse away easier. It adds depth and gloss. It is thin, so it does not stop a stone. See our ceramic coating page.

Using both

The most complete setup is film on the front end where the stones hit, and ceramic coating over the rest of the paint (and over the film, where the product allows). We always polish the paint before either one, so you protect smooth paint instead of locking in swirl marks.

Which should you buy first?

If your biggest worry is chips and you drive highway, start with film on the front end. If your biggest frustration is a dull, hard-to-wash finish, start with a polish and ceramic coating. If you can only do one and you drive a lot, the front-end film usually saves more money; the coating makes more of a difference to everyday ownership. Honestly, the right answer depends on your vehicle, so tell us about it in your quote notes.

Three real-life examples

  • The highway commuter: Airdrie to Calgary daily. Front-end PPF first, ceramic later.
  • The family SUV that lives in the driveway: a polish and ceramic coating makes washing easier and keeps the paint looking new.
  • The new truck you want to keep perfect: film on the front, ceramic on the rest, tint for the cabin.

What about wax or a sealant?

Wax and sealants are short-term layers that need reapplying. They are fine for budget protection and a bit of shine. Our Signature Detail includes a 30-day ceramic sealant, and our Stage 1 and Stage 2 polishes (without ceramic) include our House Wax Sealant. A ceramic coating is the long-term step up. Neither a wax nor a coating stops a stone.

Common mistakes

  • Buying a coating to stop rock chips.
  • Applying film or coating over swirled, dull paint without polishing first.
  • Expecting a coating to mean you never wash the vehicle again.
