For most drivers who use Highway 2 or gravelled roads regularly, protecting the front end with PPF is worth it. At O Detail it starts at $449, with full-front coverage from $1,599.

Why Alberta is hard on paint

Driving around Airdrie and Calgary means road gravel in winter, traction sand, loose stone on highway shoulders and trucks that throw debris at highway speed. The front bumper, hood, fenders and mirrors take almost every impact. Each chip is small, but it breaks through the clear coat. Over a few winters, bare metal can start to rust at the edge of a chip, and chips cluster along the leading edge of the hood.

What PPF actually does

Paint protection film is a clear urethane layer applied over paint. When a stone hits, the film takes the impact instead of the paint. Some films also recover from light scuffs. It does not make paint indestructible: a hard enough hit can still mark the film, but a film can be replaced, while repainting a hood costs far more. You may hear it called 3M or a clear bra. It is the same thing: PPF is just the newer name.

When it is worth it

  • You commute on Highway 2, the Deerfoot or other gravelled roads. The more highway kilometres, the more chips.
  • The vehicle is new, leased or you plan to keep it a long time. Clean paint helps resale value and lease returns.
  • You park outside or own a dark colour. Chips are most visible on dark paint.

When it may not be

  • The front end is already heavily chipped. Film covers chips but does not repair them, so we would advise on prep first.
  • You plan to sell the vehicle soon and it is older. The cost may not come back.
  • Budget is tight. A smaller package such as PPF Starter protects the highest-impact area for less.

What it costs at O Detail

Our PPF prices start at $449 (PPF Starter), with PPF Premium from $995 for cars and $1,249 for SUVs, vans and trucks and Full Front Coverage from $1,599. Larger vehicles and custom coverage are quoted individually. GST extra. See the details on our paint protection film page.

The honest takeaway

If your front end is clean and you drive highway kilometres, protect it early. If chips are already everywhere, talk to us first and we will tell you what makes sense. PPF is the right tool for stones; for gloss and easier washing, read PPF vs ceramic coating.

Which panels to protect first

If you cannot protect everything, protect in order of impact. First the front bumper and the leading edge of the hood, which take the most direct hits. Then the fenders and the mirrors, which collect the spray that rolls off the hood. After that, the headlights and the area in front of the windshield if you drive a lot of highway. A smaller package done on the right panels beats a bigger one on the wrong ones.

Three questions to ask before you decide

  1. How many highway kilometres do I drive? Chips scale with distance and speed.
  2. How long will I keep this vehicle? The longer you keep it, the more the film earns back.
  3. How would a chip on the hood bother me? If you would notice and care, protection is easy to justify. If you would not, it may not be for you.

What to ask any shop before booking PPF

  • Which film do you use, and what warranty does it carry?
  • Who installs it, and how long have they done it?
  • How are the edges finished, and will they be visible?
  • What is the aftercare, and when can I wash the vehicle?
  • What happens if the film is damaged later?

We are happy to answer all of these in person.

Common myths

  • 'PPF makes paint invisible to damage.' No. It absorbs small stones and scuffs, not every impact.
  • 'It is only for expensive cars.' Chips do not care what the vehicle cost. They care how many kilometres it drives on gravel.
  • 'Ceramic coating does the same thing.' It does not stop stones. See our comparison.
